2 Timothy 2:23 – Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. (NIV)
In our world today, topics related to politics, religion, gender, race and faith generate unnecessary arguments and tension among people.
The Bible is not silent on instructing us on how to engage potentially difficult conversations.
God’s word makes it clear that we should reason and discuss amicably but firmly in the absolutes of the word of God as we are persuaded. We should be respectful in all our conversations and ensure that the truth of God’s word is what informs everything we say.
Apostle Peter advised us in 1 Peter 3:15 to revere Christ in our discussions and be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks us to give the reason for the hope that we have. We are to engage in all discussions with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).
In a few instances, we may also need to remain silent and say nothing like our Lord and Savior Jesus did when relating to various sects of His time who brought up controversial questions. It may not be fruitful to respond to certain questions.
2nd Timothy 2:23-26 – Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants. (NLT)
PRAYER: Lord, help me to always be aware that I will give account of every idle word I speak. Please help me to avoid senseless arguments that engender strife in Jesus name. Amen.
