1 Peter 5:8-9 (NIV): Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
I remember once watching a simulation on how people would react in an emergency. People who were sober and alert made it out of the apartment within a safe amount of time. Those who abused drugs had a delayed or no reaction at all.
A person who is not alert is in danger. A person who is not sober minded will not make the best decisions.
As believers, things that cloud our judgement can have the same effect on us spiritually. We are not alert when we expose ourselves to things that negate spiritual alertness like certain TV shows, music, or entertainment.
We can become more alert by shifting our focus back on God, diving into the word and praying. Let us be sober always so we can overcome our enemy who is looking to destroy us.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to be more alert and sober minded. Help me to discern the things around me that harm me and my relationship with You so I can avoid them in Jesus name. Amen.
