Romans 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. (NKJV)
The right attitude we should have to life as limited humans is total dependence on God. Because God is all knowing and perfect, we are to trust and obey Him wholeheartedly.
Our reference scripture gives a clear command from God not to revenge when we are wronged. As Christians it is important to obey this command because the justice system of God is complex, and He alone knows and understands everything.
Looking at this in a practical way, there are so many variables and possibilities involved in human relationships and because of this, we have no right to take judgment into our hands.
Jesus Christ is our perfect example of dealing with offences and we are to follow His example.1 Peter 2:23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. (NLT)
Whenever you find yourself in a situation when you feel like you should take matters into your own hands, remember that:
- You are a flawed human being who doesn’t know all things (1 Corinthians 13:9)
- You also make wrong decisions/offend other people intentionally or unintentionally (James 3:2)
- The person who has wronged you may not be aware what they did is wrong (1 Corinthians 4:4-5)
- Even in a rare case of malice against you, remember God’s forgiveness for your past sins and extend mercy (Acts 7:59-60)
Also make sure to:
- Seek reconciliation (Matthew 5:23-24)
- Treat people the way you want to be treated (Matthew 7:12)
Remember: the [resentful, deep-seated] anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us]. James 1:20 (AMP)
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you for teaching me not to take matters into my own hands. Thank you for showing me that you alone are the righteous Judge. Help me to always extend mercy to others and never to take matters into my own hands. Amen.
