Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
God has plans for us as believers and intends that we walk with Him step-by-step; day-by-day. Sadly, we often get distracted by life’s pressures and worldly cares. However, Jesus commands us not to worry about tomorrow, to trust that everything we need and all that God decides is good for us will come to us.
King David’s life is a good example of walking day-by-day with God and seeking first His kingdom.
After being anointed King of Israel in 1 Samuel 16, David waited patiently for God to act on his behalf, rather than take matters into his own hands. While waiting, he focused on his daily walk with God and did not attempt to manipulate his way to the throne.
After King Saul died, rather than engage in strife to claim a vacant throne, he asked God what to do next and God told him to go to Hebron in Judah. 2nd Samuel 2:1 In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked. The Lord said, “Go up.” David asked, “Where shall I go?” “To Hebron,” the Lord answered. (NIV)
While at Hebron, David continued to wait patiently on God for seven years and six months until God made things work in His favor. 2 Samuel 5:1-3 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler. ’When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. (KJV)
Can you imagine what would have happened if David had abandoned his daily walk with God and primary assignments to chase the throne?
God’s promises to us -His children- are to help us live godly lives, (See 2Peter 1:3-4) not replace our walk with Him.
Don’t abandon God’s purpose for your life to chase ‘promises’. Choose to walk with God step-by- step, and day-by-day from today.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I thank you for the good things you have shown me about my future. I choose to wait patiently on you and allow you to work things out in your own way. Deliver me from all anxiety about tomorrow and help me walk with you day-by-day in Jesus name. Amen.
