Psalm 68:5 NLT – ‘Father to the fatherless, defender of widows-this is God, whose dwelling is holy.’
God created us for a relationship. As a Good Shepherd He cherishes being a Father to all His creation. Therefore it’s not surprising that He used relational terms to describe himself in our reference verse for today; He is our heavenly Father, the father of the fatherless, and the husband of the widow. In Matthew 7:9 Jesus inquires, “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?”. Jesus being the express image of the Father asked an insightful question to highlight the goodness and kindness of God as our Father. He knows how to give good things to His children. Other religions don’t see their god as a Father. A compassionate father gives good gifts and cares about the welfare of His Children. Not many are privileged to have a good father with admirable qualities and character. So, if you have a godly faithful father, you are blessed (Pro. 20:6).
If your earthly father is not as good as you expected or hoped, this is your opportunity to embrace God, our heavenly Father. Unlike our earthly fathers, our Heavenly Father is perfect, and His everlasting loving arms are open to embrace and adopt all that are willing to belong to His family. He affirms us as He bids us to come. He is not a wicked father. He is not a runaway father. He is an ever-present Father and He accepts as many as come to Him.
His commandments and demands are not to burden or scare you. You are His beloved and safe in His compassionate arms. Do not push back, because His habitation is holy. He made provision for your repentance from sin by presenting His Beloved Son Jesus Christ. All He requires as you come to Him is that you accept Christ’s Love for redeeming you from sin. Let God usher you into this wonderful relationship with Him and His family.
PRAYER: Heavenly loving Father, I thank you for seeking me out and making me your child. Thank you for your compassionate love for those who fear you (Psalm 103:13).
